Finding something to do on Valentine’s Day can be a struggle in a small town like Ephraim. This year students were invited to dissect a pig heart.
Single or taken, this was a unique opportunity to bond with someone. Whether interested in the heart or not, it was a good time to talk to new people and learn all at once.
Grey, a mechanical engineering student, had gone to try something new, "I felt that it was a cool experience even if I did not know much about it. It gave me a chance to stop and ask some questions.”
It was a good chance to ask about anatomy and functions of the heart from experienced advisors such as Erica Simonson (an anatomy professor).
Before the dissection was started each person was paired with another to take a deeper look inside of the heart. Once in pairs with the equipment needed, Nick Lake, one of the dental chairs for UHS, was able to give instructions.
For some like Chrislyn Bassett, the hour dissection did not seem long enough, “This is what I want to do in the future, it was a great experience being able to dissect the heart.” It gives a person a look into a heart similar to ones’ own. Look into the heart of a pig to see into one's own while gaining experience.
