What most students don’t know is that all the flags in the GSC Commons represent at least one student and the country they are from.
Snow College is home to 235 students from 60 different countries, giving everyone a great opportunity to learn about and experience new cultures.
Alex Peterson, the professor of the Community Outreach class, says, “It’s a class that talks about different cultural things. It introduces local people to international students, concepts, and ideas.”
This class and others are part of the TESL program (Teaching English as a Second Language). Along with Snow, they celebrated International Education Week. (IEW)
“IEW is celebrated in all universities across the United States. It is so schools can talk about international education.”
Peterson also said that this week focuses on activities such as a cultural film festival, foods from different countries at lunch, a convocation, and presentations about foreign countries by students. Students also have Study Abroad opportunities as part of the TESL program.
Being in small-town Ephraim limits locals from being able to experience different cultures. Peterson urges students at Snow to “interact with people who have different ideas, different cultures, and different backgrounds. That’s what IEW helps us to do.”
