Snow College hosted their 47th annual Math Contest on March 18. Local High School and Middle School students came to Snow to compete for various prizes including a scholarship to Snow.
Professor Jonathan Bodrero from the Math Department explained that they host this competition to “celebrate those who like math and give them a chance to compete.”
The students were split into Seniors (Grades 10 through 12) and Juniors (Grades 7 through 9). The Seniors were set up in the LDS Institute Building and the Juniors were in the LDS Stake Center next door.
Jayleigh Twitchell from South Sevier High School said that at these competitions “it’s fun just to come out and to test your knowledge and grow better from these tests we take.”
For the Seniors, the competition consisted of a two hour test that went through various mathematical processes and methods. However, the Juniors only took an hour long test, then spent the next hour competing in an activity. This year, they made marshmallow and spaghetti noodle towers. Whoever made the tallest tower in the allotted time was the winner.

Math Department Assistant Professor, Steven Hart, explained that a lot of times people think, ‘Oh, I’m not a math person,’ but math can be a lot of fun. “This is a chance to have fun that’s not your regular homework and doing stuff in class. It’s a chance to experience math a little bit differently.”
The Snow College Math Department enjoys hosting this event every year. They are also looking forward to celebrating their 50th annual competition in a few years and are excited to make it a bigger event to celebrate.
