During the final week before spring break students and music fans were given a smooth sounding sendoff into the following week as on the 25 of February the music program at Snow college hosted what was called the “The Jazz Big Band Concert”.

The concert began at 7:30 and featured many jazz hits and performed by a band consisting of 17 total student musicians. The Concert featured many jazz classics such as “You “n Me”, “Street of Dreams” and the best of all “Lonely Moments” by Mary Lou Williams.

Each song brought its own bit of flair and style, whether it was to relax and soothe everyone in the audience or bring a bit of spark to their lives.

Each song had made sure that it was separated from the rest of the set and had its own link in the history of jazz music. The band cast a wide range of student talent but the most prevalent and active was Alto 1 and section leader Zion Angilau who had played a saxophone solo on almost every song during the performance. and all the music was conducted by Snow College music professor Steve Erickson.

Erickson at the end of the show was asked on what made him pick the songs he did, and he replied with “A wide variety of things, sometimes I’m just looking for things that are different. Sometimes I’ll look for things that are fast, things that are slow things that are rocking” and he later when asked about what he enjoys the most about teaching young ambitious musicians he said, “I feel like I can give them some insight and some knowledge that’s going to be valuable.”

Overall, an incredible performance with not just amazing music, but amazing musicians as well.
