Often students find themselves overwhelmed with upcoming assignments. Especially oral presentations and speeches, online or in-person. Most students are unaware that Snow College offers a free Communication Lab located in the Lucy Phillips Building on the second floor. It is a tutoring lab where students can come and receive help with their presentations and speeches on a daily basis.
“It’s a resource for students to be able to improve their communication skills and abilities,” says comm lab tutor, Kelby Wegwitz. As a current student who has taken advantage of the comm lab in the past, Wegwitz also expressed how beneficial it was to him and the work he would do in classes. “When I’ve gone to the comm lab, I’ve usually come in with a speech in mind. The tutors there have been able to help me refine my word choice . . . so that it flows better.”
When a student schedules a 15-minute appointment at the comm lab, they are able to briefly meet with one or two tutors while visiting. Students have the opportunity to meet in person, through Zoom, or over the phone.
The tutor will work with them to go through any kinks in their speech or presentation and will also help to simply brainstorm to create a speech or presentation. Also included are tips and tricks that a student can utilize in order to do better on their assignments. Things such as good eye contact, light hand gestures, some movement, and clear pronunciation.
All tutors at the lab are well experienced and have taken communication classes before, along with public speaking courses offered at Snow College. The help offered at the comm lab is professional and offered to all students.
“I think it’s nice because it’s so needs-based,” Kenzie Skousen, another tutor at the comm lab said. She too has used the lab as a resource, and now appreciates it even more as someone who works there and helps other students. Skousen continues with her experience at the lab, “My ideas are more focused.” She believes it is a great opportunity for students to come in and receive help, organization, and to brainstorm.
