One of America's least-known national holidays is right around the corner, Presidents Day. President's Day is when most people take a seat, not go to work or school, and just enjoy the day off without even thinking about why they have that day off. Why have it off when many Americans don’t know why they celebrate it? Well, it has an important meaning and is one reason Americans celebrate the great day.
Presidents Day is celebrated every third Monday in February, which this year falls on February 17. It is a nationally celebrated holiday that is generally established by law; many schools, companies, and offices recognize this holiday.
Presidents Day is a day meant to recognize two of America's great leaders, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Two of the most influential men in United States history.
President Washington played an important role in helping America receive liberty and separate themselves from Great Britain He played the role of General in the Army for the United States and later on became the first president of the United States.
President Abraham Lincoln, was the sixteenth president of the United States and wrote the Emancipation Proclamation which freed the enslaved slaves in the United States, one of the most important events in American history, because of what he had done however he was martyred for freeing the slaves.
Current President, Donald J. Trump, had remarks about these two presidents saying, “ George Washington remains first in our hearts to this day. For as long as Americans love this land, we will honor and cherish the father of our country, George Washington. . . [and with] Lincoln, he won the Civil War; he issued the Emancipation Proclamation; he led the passage of the 13th Amendment, abolishing slavery for all time; and ultimately, his determination to preserve our nation and our union cost him his life. For as long as we live, Americans will uphold and revere the immortal memory of President Abraham Lincoln.”
These two Presidents achieved accomplishments that have put America where it is today. So we take school or work off this Presidents Day, take a moment to reflect on what these Presidents have done and why it is important to this country.
